Detached garages start the way any structure does: excavation, footings, a formed slab with a thickened perimeter and a full mat of steel. That is a job Russ has posted from the dirt up. From there it is walls, trusses, sheathing, roof and door, and the header over the door opening is the piece that carries most of the front wall, so it gets sized rather than guessed.

The lot decides more than people expect. Setbacks, easements, how the driveway meets the apron, which way the ground falls and where the water ends up in a spring melt. Getting the pad elevation right is what keeps the floor dry for thirty years.

Shops get the same shell with different insides: a taller plate height, a slab thickened where a lift or heavy equipment lands, a subpanel and circuits for real tools, and the door sized for the vehicle you actually own rather than the one the standard opening assumes.
