1 job, up close

The walk-in was a bedroom nobody slept in.

Most houses have square footage in the wrong place. We opened the wall the master shared with the spare room, ran the closet through it, and built the shelving to the room instead of buying it to almost fit.

The part that decides whether it works is the old doorway: framed out, floated, the flooring run straight through. From the hallway there is nothing to notice.

Before the pour

The part under the concrete is the part that matters.

Concrete hides everything done underneath it, which is exactly why that is where the work goes.

Ground compacted in lifts: not filled and hoped over.
Steel up on chairs: in the slab where it works, not lying in the dirt.
Footings below frost depth: Cedar City winters lift anything shallower.

The same wall, finished

Then the boards went on, and the room changed.

Vertical boards run up to a cap rail, the paper carries the wall from there to the ceiling, and the two meet on 1 line that holds level the whole way across. The wall behind all of it was patched flat first, because boards only sit tight against a wall that is already true.

Nothing structural moved. Same room, same footprint, and the bed went back where it always was. This is the trade doing the whole of its job: the part you look at every day is the last quarter-inch of it.
