The job behind the photograph.

Most master bathrooms in Cedar City were framed small and lit worse. The fix is rarely an addition. It is moving what is movable: the toilet a few feet, the vanity out to the full run of the wall, a second basin where there was one, and the wall-sized builder mirror gone in favour of framed glass and real light. The last one Russ finished went from small and dark to, in his words, larger, brighter and more livable, and the wall stayed where it was.

Underneath that sits the part nobody photographs. Waste and supply relocated and pressure-tested. New circuits pulled for the can lights and the fan. Backer board and a sloped, waterproofed shower pan before a single tile goes on, because a shower that leaks does it silently for 2 years and then presents you with the joists.

And then there is what turns up when the tile comes off, which on a house of any age is something. Rot behind the pan. A vent that was never a vent. A supply line spliced by a previous owner. 41 years is knowing what that is, what it costs, and how to say so on the same day it appears rather than at the end.
